About Harmonic Stagebeams

Hi I’m Isy, some of you may know me as Shu. I’m a librarian, theatrician, community volunteer and serial hobbyist. I create, critique and advocate for theatre.

I created this substack as a way to record my reviews and thoughts on Singapore theatre and the arts. The name is just a riff-off another username of mine (harmonic sunbeams), but I do believe staging work is always about pursuing harmony in aesthetics and messaging too, so it works. I thought it would be funny for harmonicstagebeams to spill the harmonicstagebeans, but there’s really nothing saucy to spill. What you see is what you get — my thoughts, criticisms and love for the arts will be documented here.

It’s really important for me to continue writing and responding to theatre performances, even when I am no longer fully employed in the performing arts. It’s also important for artists and the arts landscape that audiences document our thoughts and how art makes us feel, so that we can extend the memory of an ephemeral experience. I hope you can join me in this small effort.

It’s all theatre for now, but I’ll start to include reviews of exhibitions and other things as we go along. You can subscribe by clicking the big button below and you’ll get my writing or works direct in your email inbox, or you can just view them right here at harmonicstagebeams.substack.com. If you’d like to invite me to review a piece of work, do write to me via email.

I’m still playing around with my voice and my identity as a critic and advocate, and I foresee that this will be an ever-changing and meandering journey. I ask for your patience and understanding when navigating my messy writing and please feel free to reach out. I’d love to connect.

xx
